Chris "Doc" MacKinnon, Team Canada |
(CANUSA Press) June 16, 2009- Chris MacKinnon, known to all of us simply as "Doc", is a Canadian teammate that
anyone would be proud of.
It's been a while since we have profiled any member of the CANUSA Cup, but we thought that Doc should garner some attention.
He continues to be a rock solid member of Team Canada, and a great friend to all. Doc suffered a tragic loss last fall,
and thankfully, his friends and family have rallied around him.
Seeing Doc in the Spring was a good tonic for all players, especially your writer. Chris is one of the people I
truly miss being around since my departure from teh Triangle area, and I look forward to seeing him with each CANUSA.
All our best to you, Doc...except when you are teeing it up against Team USA, of course.

Matthews ditches oil for Colorado

Team USA stalwart Mike Matthews |
(AP) Feb. 25, 2007
A wise man once said, "a flute with no holes is not a flute, and a donut with no holes is a danish."
That saying has no meaning to Mike Matthews.
The likeable American has turned a corner in his life, finally admitting that he, in fact, likes life, more than making
big cash in a dangerous occupation such as working an oil rig. Only problem is, his new locale will prevent him from
making his way to the CANUSA Cup matches this April.
"Between the move, and getting reacquainted with my true love, Joe Sakic, there's just no way I can make it," Matthews
said.
His presence on the American squad will certainly be missed. He is always there to provide his team with a solid
round of golf, and is usually good for a solid can count at days end.
"Mikey is a big part of our team," USA Captain Mike Solarte said. "No question what he and (anthony) Compton bring
to the table is hard to quantify. We'll have to do our best without him in our lineup."
The only thing left for Matthews to do now, is to have that pesky restraining order placed against him by Sakic, lifted.
"One day, he'll come around, " Matthews siad.
The Spring CANUSA Cup matches will tee off April 14th at The Crossings Golf Club in Durham NC, admission is free,
and nfans are encouraged to join in the revelry.

Canadian Captain Paul Armes wants another victory cigar on April 22. |
April 2, 2006
Paul Armes has never been a guy looking for the popular pick. He roots for teams like the New york Islanders, Chicago
Cubs and New Orleans Saints. To say he is an optimist would be an understatement.
Team Canada's captain also is optimistic about his squads chance to defend the CANUSA Cup title on Aprill 2nd.
"Winning the last one this past fall was a huge boost to our side, " Armes said. "Our guys banded together, got some
big performances, and were able to come away with the Cup."
That Canadian victory was one for the storybooks, although the storybooks won't ever have the complete story. The
scorecards were lost or stolen following the competition, so the margin of victory is unknown.
"They beat us, fair and square, " Team USA captain Mike Solarte said. "We will never debate the outcome, because
they handed it to us pretty good. I hope they enjoy hanging onto her untill the 22nd, because we intend to claim it
back."
As for the scorecard issue, Solarte continued, "it's all the same anyway. There aren't too many people out there
who care about the final score--just as long as they know who won."
Armes knows who won. "I'm not one to gloat, but it was a pretty thorough ass-kicking."
Armes recently received a move upstairs within his company, a job which still hasn't improved his ability to reply to e-mails.
"The desk gig gives me longer lunches."
The optimist looks ahead to the resumption of the CANUSA Cup matches on April 22nd with his usual outlook.
"We'll drink, knock it around, and at the end of the day, count 'em up and see who wins."
